At 14-quart capacity, the Magefesa Star R is generously sized to meet most pressure cooker needs, from family dinners to canning. Designed and made in Spain, it is made with 18/10 stainless steel, and constructed from premium stainless steel, creating a cooking vessel for optimal performance, as well as modern design in appearance and function.

This cooker encapsulates 5 layers of metals in the bottom as stainless steel, silver, aluminum, silver and  stainless steel. The beauty of this cladding process provides quick cooking times with the heat being rapidly and evenly distributed for uniform cooking and exceptional results. What this means, is that you will have consistent results each time, all while saving energy from longer use of traditional cooking methods.

The stainless steel material that is used also prevents flavors being compromised in the food through the cooking process, because it does not react with the foods. In addition, it also provides a non-stick environment, preventing foods from sticking to the surface, making it easier to serve, as well as clean up.

It’s also suitable for cooking on all types of cooktops such as gas, electric, ceramic and induction. The overall dimensions (W, D, H) are 12 x 12 x 12 inches, and weighs in at 1 pound.

Safety Features

Cooking with pressure cookers can be risky, if you don’t use it for its intended purpose. It’s best to read the owner’s manual thoroughly before you use it for the first time. Doing so will better your chances of success, as well as keep you safe while using it.

In addition to reading the instructions carefully, there has been some safety features put into place for the Magefesa Star R for consumer protection. Take a look at the following 3 very important safety systems that this pressure cooker features:

  1. A Rotating Dead Weight Valve – This serves as a primary valve that regulates the operating pressure within the cooker at all times, which allows any excess steam to escape.
  2. Safety Valve – As a secondary measure, the safety valve comes into play when the pressure becomes excessive. This can happen when the steam pipe becomes obstructed. It’s best to remove the cooker from the heat at this point and clean it out after it cools.
  3. Clamp Bar – This is a backup safety feature in case the two features listed above malfunction or become obstructed. The excess pressure from within the cooker will bend the clamp bar enough to allow steam to exit, while not allowing the pressure inside to increase unnecessarily.

Along with the impressive 3-part safety system, it also features a progressive lock system, a safety clamp to ensure optimum safety when in use, and handles that are easy to grip to prevent burns and spills.

For additional safety, make sure the cooker is closed properly while cooking. To do this, make sure the tightening knob is turned to the lowest position when placing the lid on the body so it fits snug. Next, rotate the knob clockwise until you notice slight pressure, then continue to close by turning the knob 1.5 to 2 times until the lid is sealed tight. Finally, place the “rotating dead weight valve onto the steam pipe, which is attached to the lid.

Pressure Setting

This pressure cooker is designed for 8 psi (pounds per square inch) converted from 0.55kgs. This is considered to be a medium pressure level as compared to the standard of 15 psi in pressure cooking. What it means is that you may have to adjust up or down on the cooking time if your recipe calls for 15 psi or a lower pressure to compensate for the lower pressure level.

2 Short Handles

Two short handles are ergonomically designed and stay cool during cooking.

2 Pressure Release Methods

Use either the “Cold Water Method” or “Natural Release Method” to release pressure after the cooking is done. These two are the tried-and-true release methods. The “Cold Water” works by removing the cooker from the hob and running cold water over the lid for a few minutes until the pressure indicator recedes down. To use the second method, remove the pressure cooker from the heat source and let it sit for a while to release the inside pressure naturally. This may take a little while so plan your meal accordingly.

Easy to Use and Clean

Using a pressure cooker takes just a few minutes of reading and effort in the beginning to make sure you are using it correctly. After that, it should become second nature in creating tasty meals with little effort and even less time.

With the Magefesa Star R the time for cooking is calculated, beginning at the time the “rotating dead weight valve” starts to move and steam to release. At that point, you will lower the heat level just enough to keep the valve rotating gently. And, it’s perfectly normal to see some steam escaping from the safety valve.

In order to maintain your cooker in good condition, proper cleaning it is important. Using warm water, make sure to clean any part that comes in contact with food particles such as the lid and body. While the body can be placed in a dishwasher, the lid never should be.

Clean the steam pipe with a thin rod, as well as the safety valve, and let warm water run through them both.

The bottom of the vessel might develop bluish or gold colored spots from food particles or lime from your water. When this happens, you can use boiling water with a dash of lemon juice or vinegar to remove the spots.

Not sure what’s included in the purchase. You can also purchase a separate steamer basket. The steamer and replacement parts can be purchased through an authorized retailer or directly through Magefesa.

  • Not sure if a trivet and a steamer basket are included in the purchase.
  • Some customers reported that no User Manual was included in the shipment.
  • Packaging on arrival was battered and worn.
  • Inadequate customer service: I called the Magefesa USA office in Miami, FL to ask about the pressure settings for this model. Got through to the Receptionist instead of the Customer Service Department. Didn’t speak to anyone because they were busy. My impression about the Customer Service was unprofessional. The company website also reflects the same as the products are haphazardly presented and miss out on important facts such as the pressure level.
