The Kuhn Rikon 3914 3.75-Quart Pressure Cooker is not only built to last, but also built with safety in mind. The  built-in safety features should ease the mind of anyone who is still nervous about cooking with a pressure cooker. 

Take a look at what has been carefully crafted and put in place for your safety: 

  • Automatic Lid-Locking Device – This eliminates the risk of excessive and dangerous pressure build-up, when the lid is properly closed and locked. Also, the lid will not come off during cooking, nor can you remove it until you have released all of the pressure.
  • Primary Pressure Regulating Valve – This is the primary pressure regulating valve to allow excess pressure to escape from the vent stem on top of the lid.
  • Safety Escape Holes – This is a back-up safety measure if the primary valve is clogged. These safety holes are located at the rim of the lid.
  • Spring-Loaded Safety Valve – This valve is designed to release the steam, in the event that the main valve becomes blocked. This could happen if the main valve malfunctions with too much heat, or over-filling. However, it’s not a “blow plug” that was used in older models of pressure cookers. It is meant to safely release the steam at a preset pressure.
  • Gasket – When the pressure is high, the gasket is compelled outward through the 6 bayonet flanges within the lid, as steam exits in a downward motion. This is an important design characteristic as the steam is “channeled” in one direction, meaning “downward” instead of emitting in all possible directions to cause harm to the home cooks.

Pressure Level and Indicator

There are two red bands indicating two pressure levels with the first band being at 8 psi (pounds per square inch) and the second at 15 psi. When the pressure starts to build, you’d hear a gentle hissing sound and then the first red band followed by the second should your recipe calls for a 15 psi pressure level. When the desired pressure is reached, it’s time to adjust the heat down to “medium” or “low” based on your heat source. One of the Kuhn Rikon’s design hallmarks is the minimal heat level required to maintain the pressure due to the fully enclosed design feature.

Two Handles – One Long + One Short

This model comes with two handles, a long/operating handle and a short helping handle. Comparing to those with two short handles, this one takes a bit of extra space (about 7″ with the long handle) in storage. So keep it in mind when making a decision.

4 Methods to Release Pressure

Four methods are available to safely de-compressurize after cooking is done. On top of the primary vent cover, there are three “steam buff” icons. The big one is sandwiched by two small ones. When the dial is positioned toward the big steam buff, it means “quick release”. When towards one of the small steam buffs, it indicates “slow release”. 

Besides these two methods, there are two standby as “cold water” and “natural release”. If applying “cold water” method, remove the cooker from the hob and run cold water on top of the lid for a few minutes to get similar effect of a quick release method. “Natural release” means “nice and slow” to let the pressure cooker “chill or cool off” on its own. Be patient with this method and plan your meal accordingly.

Before the first use, make sure you wash the unit thoroughly including the pan, gasket, and lid. You can easily wash it with hot and soapy water. Next, read the owner’s manual from start to finish. It will provide great instructions, as well as recipes so you can create delicious meals, much quicker than conventional cooking, and maintain as many nutrients possible. 

However, to give longevity to your Kuhn Rikon 3914 Pressure Cooker, it needs to be well-maintained through use, as well as cleaning it thoroughly.
