Introduction

Futura is one of new models among many pressure cooker lines manufactured by Hawkins, an Indian manufacturer of pressure cookers for over 50 years. This model is the best example of form meeting function.

With its sleek and elegant appearance, it’s also available in 8 different sizes for every family needs. The Futura is lightweight and easy to handle while it’s crafted with a durable hard-anodized  finish.

One of the design signatures in Hawkins pressure cookers is that the lid doesn’t just sit on the outside of the pot, but rather is fully sealed inside the cavity, trapping the food and liquid inside. With this feature, the sealing ring will not rub sideways when the lid is closed, or opened. In this position, it is also kept away from damaging exposure to acids commonly found in foods and the life of the sealing ring will be significantly extended.

Size, Capacity and Material

At 5.0-liter/or 5.28-quart capacity, the Hawkins Futura Pressure Cooker is the perfect size to create wonderful meals for singles to medium-sized families. Even for a large family, its size is adequate for veggies, rice, risotto, beans and side dishes. If you need a larger or smaller size, you have a nice variety to choose from with the Hawkins Futura ranging from as small as 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6.5, 7 all the way up to 9 liter with 8 sizes in total. It’s rare that you would find such an extensive capacity variations in another brand.

The cooker is made of hard-anodized finish with a 6.35 mm thick base in the cooking pot. In case you are not that familiar with hard-anodized material, it is aluminum that has been oxidized. The merits of the anodized aluminum are the harder surface and non-reaction and corrosion to acidic foods in addition to the inherently efficient heat conductivity in aluminum. All this means that the cooker will last for a long time and produces consistent meals time and time again.

The flat bottom allows this cooker to be used on most stoves, including electric, gas, halogen, and ceramic tops, but not induction.  Two maximum fill lines are found within the cooker’s body, marked for your convenience during the filling process to prevent over-filling.

The dimensions are (in inches as w-d-h): 16.33 x 9.84 x 8.26 with base diameter of 7.08″ and maximum body diameter of 9.37″.

Safety Features

When choosing the right pressure cooker for your needs, it’s always important to know what safety features are in place for the cookers you are considering. Without proper safeguards, pressure cooking can be dangerous, due to the method of cooking with built-up steam.

However, a pressure cooker that has proper safeguards eliminates the element of danger, as long as you follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. These can easily be found within the owner’s manual, which you can even view online prior to purchasing the unit.

Take a look at the safety features in this model:

  • Pressure-Locked Safety Lid – This lid is designed to lock up tight with a seal equivalent to the door on an airplane when closed properly. You will not be able to remove it, as long as there is remaining pressure in the cooker. Once the pressure level is released fully, the lid can be removed.
  • Pressure Regulator – This is the primary pressure valve powered by a spring mechanism to hold the regulator onto the steam vent. The steam vent has 13 holes to allow the excess steam to escape even if some might be blocked by food particles.
  • Safety Value – This is a backup safety valve in the event the primary steam vent is obstructed. This valve will also kick into gear if there is not enough liquid or the liquid is boiled completely dry.

1 Pressure Setting

It is set as 15 psi (pounds per square inch). This is also the standard pressure level called upon by many pressure cooking recipes.

2 Handles

Both the long/operative and the short handles are riveted into the cooking pot for stability and durability. They will stay cool during the cooking.

3 Pressure Release Methods

The Futura model has a built-in finger-tip control in the long body handle that allows “quick release” by simply pressing the control. The finer design touch is that the steam will be released in the opposite direction away from the long handle to minimize the risk of burning. This method is perfect for delicate foods such as seafood and vegetables that they can be overcooked if using a slower release method.

Speaking of slower release methods, “natural release” is perhaps as slow as it gets. Remove the pot from the heat source and let it cool off on its own. This may take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes. So factor this time in your meal planning.

The old standby “cold water” refers to the method where you take the pot and run cold water in the sink or place the cooker into a basin with 4 inches of cold water. This works perfectly for soups and foods that tend to froth or foam such as beans and rice.

Easy to Use and Clean

You can use this cooker for a variety of meals, as well as methods of cooking. For example, you can steam, brown, or lightly fry some foods in this cooker, along with pressure cooking. However, it’s always best to read the owner’s manual completely before using it for the first time.

Cleaning is easy, but the cooker should never be placed in a dishwasher to allow for maximum durability and longevity. Use dish soap and warm water for basic cleaning. For stains, you can use a chlorine-based kitchen cleanser to set for about 5-10 minutes before wiping off and rinsing. Never use an abrasive cleanser or tool on the cooker.

If the steam vent becomes clogged to the point that rinsing isn’t enough, you can use a needle to dislodge the food particles.

The Futura comes with a dual cleaning brush, with the short end to be used between the steam vent and the pressure regulator, and the larger part for between the lid and the handle.

Accessories

Each Hawkins Futura Pressure Cooker comes with a trivet, which helps minimize the contact between the cooking fluid and the food. A dual cleaning brush is also included.
